Finally Thomas Tuchel has found his next John Terry in his squad

Antonio Rudiger has evolved into one of Europe’s most feared defenders, making the left centre-half role his own under Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea but the German has just one year remaining on his contract.

The Blues have begun to schedule meetings to tackle Chelsea’s emerging contract saga as the various parties look to converge on extending retrospective contracts, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Andreas Christensen, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta all see their current deals at Stamford Bridge expire at the end of the season and neither is yet to pen an extension.

With a loom of uncertainty floating around the halls of Cobham training ground, Tuchel can begin to scour the academy and loan network for a ready-made alternative that could save the Blues millions of pounds.
Chelsea have a handful of suitors who could play on the left of the back-three, but the German boss must ask himself how many of those actually qualify as suitable options.

Rudiger’s successor could be closer to home in the shape of Levi Colwill, who is currently impressing on loan at Huddersfield Town in the Championship.

The 18-year-old Cobham graduate is a left-footed centre-half, archetypal of the modern defender who could one day succeed the German in the left of the Tuchel’s back-three – similar to how John Terry also went on loan before returning to become a staple at Chelsea.

Chicken kickstarted the discussion by claiming that the young Blues defender is ready for his Chelsea breakthrough before detailing how Colwill’s maturity has shone through.

“He is ready,” he began. “Considering he’s come in at 18-years-old without having played a single minute of senior football, to a side with the worst defensive record in the Championship last season, with a new goalkeeper and back-three, they’ve been much better this season. Particularly when he’s been in the team.
