Chelsea confirm £12.6m transfer of Inter Milan midfielder despite late interest from Nice

Chelsea have completed the signing of Cesare Casadei from Inter Milan. The Blues will pay an initial £12.6million fee for the midfielder in a deal that could rise by a further £4.2m in add-ons should certain criteria be met.

French side Nice attempted to hijack the move but Chelsea held out and have now confirmed the arrival of one of Italy’s brightest talents on a six-year contract

Casadei is seen as part of a midfield succession plan in south-west London as N’Golo Kante and Jorginho both approach the end of their respective contracts.

It is also part of a big-money investment in young talents this summer following the additions of Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka and Arsenal winger Omari Hutchinson, among others.

Academy director Neil Bath is being backed by the Todd Boehly-Clearlake ownership as the club aim to develop a world-leading youth team to grow into first-team options over the next few years.

Inter could use the money to fund a permanent move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who is back at the San Siro on a season-long loan, although there is an informal agreement about a second year in the right circumstances.

Inter also want to sign Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah after a personal recommendation from Lukaku.
